When on the 2nd of August 1939, young singer Lale Andersen recorded a relatively obscure song by lyricist Hans Leip in the Electrola Studio Berlin, nobody imagined it to become one of the most famous and symbolic tunes of the entertainment business.
Hans Leip (1893-1983) had written the song during World War I, and it had been a total non-seller in Norbert Schulze’s (1911-2002) version.
When the army radio Belgrad began its broadcasting in 1941, it ordered a box of records from Berlin. By pure accident, Anderson’s recording of „Lili Marlen” was among the selection. The wonder occurred: soldiers on both sides of the frontiers loved the song! Soon, an English version, sung by Marlene Dietrich, came out and became popular all over the world.
