Music: Theo Mackeben, Lyrics: Otto Ernst Haase
Theo Mackeben (1897-1953) was a classical concert pianist. He came to Berlin in 1922 and made a name for himself as a conductor. Among other things, he conducted the 1928 world premiere of the „Dreigroschenoper” at the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm.
In the Nazi era, Mackeben was much in demand as a composer. He wrote the music for many UFA films, some of which were outright propaganda movies. Mackeben’s song „Die Nacht ist nicht nur zum Schlafen da” however, sung by Gustav Gründgens in the film „Tanz auf dem Vulkan“ (1938), created trouble with the Nazi propagandists. The text line in the last stanza „Rebellion, Rebellion, in den Katakomben“ (– „rebellion, rebellion, in the catacombs” –) was not to their liking at all, and Reich Minister of Propaganda Joseph Goebbels personally ordered its removal from the LP release...
